What is Multiple Myeloma
Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, important cells of the immune system that produce and release antibodies to help fight infection. Multiple myeloma can be treated with chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant and other novel therapies, but currently, there is no cure. However, this is a hopeful time for myeloma patients because there are more treatment options available now then in the past because of the research that is being performed worldwide.
How common is Multiple Myeloma?
Multiple Myeloma is the second most prevalent blood cancer after non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The American Cancer Society estimated that 19,920 new cases would be diagnosed in 2008. At any one time, there are approximately 100,000 myeloma patients undergoing treatment for their disease in the U.S.
