The Spirit Of The 5K

GRRC 5k/walk to Defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

I ran a tough 7-mile course hill course Thursday and Friday a 5-mile course. The next day Julie said she wanted to do a 5k run. I was sore and my Achilles tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis seemed to be in one of it's recurring phases since bottoms of my feet were sore and my toes had that on fire feeling. I wanted to do this race too, I just forgot it was the next day. So I didn’t tell her I was sore. I had not been training as much as I should of and then when you try and do too much, that is what causes the Achilles tendonitis or Plantar Fasciitis or like in case both.

Of course I did terrible. I used my usual strategy, starting at a moderate pace and trying to hold that through the entire race. I was trying to push it in last mile when I saw this guy in front of me who looked like he also was in the over 60 age group. Although I worked to catch him I never did, but I still really enjoyed the race. He was in my age group and got second and I got third. We were standing there talking and he said the important thing was just running and finishing. We talked about races we have done and ones we are planning to do. As we left we said we would run together at the Galva Fourth Of July Race. I decided what he said must be the true spirit of the 5k. “The important thing is just running and finishing.” I enjoyed that race so much; I just might start running every Friday night before racing Saturday morning.
