Remember The Oglesby 10K?
Remember the Oglesby 10K, whatever happened to that race? I thought it was great 10k, ran on mostly blacktop roads in the summer, I think. Afterwards they had beer and you didn’t have to wait in a long line. Then you could spread your blankets out on grassy field while they threw door prizes out into the crowd. It was a great race that a lot of people came to. I wonder why they quit having it?

Ogelsby 10K Race....... 1982
I remember this race too. Back in 1982 I think I ran in this race. the entry fee was $10 I think. I was from Calumet City at the time and didn't have a way to get there. but I paid $10 bucks in the mail, so I wasn't going to loose out. I rode my bicycle on Friday at the crack of dawn with my camp gear loaded up. I made it to a nearby campground around 2 pm I think. It was a hot day. I met up with lots of folks who were also camping out for the big race event, and they gave me a ride to the race site the next day. I think I ran one of my best times around 40 minutes. One particular leg muscle I could tell was well worked, but it didn't feel like a hurt. After the race we went back to the campground and I recall diving off of the very high dive into the camp lake. Very cool. Later, on that Saturday, (race day) I had to start my trek back home, which I did over two days camped out mid way en route.
About the race. it was one of the best races that I went to. Very well organized and they used to through out door prizes as mentioned by another. Food, drink, prizes, entertainment. Very nicely run.
Later in the 1990s, I had the opportunity to organize a running race here in Troy Mi where I currently reside. Since I knew how a good race had been operated (and bad ones for that matter), I did what I could to produce a good race. I was race director for 6 ensuing years and eventually grew from just a 5K race to both a 5K & 10 K certified race. Lots of fun but very time consuming. I had to stop this volunteer activity that I enjoyed due to family growth.
The Oglesby race was a very well run race..... great event on all fronts.
Oglesby 10 K
My recollection is the Sarvers (Art and Barb, I think) just got burned out and couldn't find anyone to permanently take the race over. It was one of our favorites.

Yes it is a lot of work to put on a race. I wish we had more people willing to do it.
I agree. I did this race
I agree. I did this race back in 1987 also (I still have the button) and have great memories of it. The townspeople set up chairs along the course and cheered. Some of them also had sprinklers on for the runners. The race was broadcast on the local radio station. There was a band and a festival afterwards. I also remember part of the course veeering off the road onto a small dirt, inclined path, but for just a moment. Anyway, right as I finished, the band was playing Centerfield, which is a song by my favorite artist, John Fogerty, so I have good memories of that as well. I'm sorry it is no longer run, as I'd love to do it again someday.
