Cool Things I Got From Races: Heartland Hustle 10k Run Davenport, IA

Heartland Hustle 10k Run

Heartland Hustle was a very fast flat 10k. I think it ran down the street between the River Center and the Black Hawk Hotel. I think it was either Second or Third Street in Davenport, IA. I remember when a friend and I went down to get our packets the night before the race and I got the really cool hooded sweatshirt in the picture. I liked this race, to bad they only had it for a couple years. If anyone else remembers please leave a comment below to say what you remember about it.

Finish line banner for the women's race

I remember this being a great event. I happened to be standing at the finish area and as the overall winner of the women's race approached the line, a banner was stretched across the line. The runner crossed the line, ran through the banner, not tearing it. I picked the banner up and it has been in my possession ever since that day. A great memory!

Heartland Hustle children's race 1988-1989

I ran the Heartland Hustle Children's race when I was in forth grade. I'm not sure if it was the newspaper who took this photo I remember or if it was the group that sponsored the race. My dad, a single father & my older sister were shocked that I wanted to run in this race in Downtown Davenport. My Dad said I practiced & practiced & was so excited to pick up my packet at the river center. He didn't really think I would actually complete it. My supportive dad & my sister watched me run for all I was worth. The were cheering me on & I remember feeling so proud. A photo was taken of me running past them & they were in the background in mid-jump & mid-clap. I remember looking at this picture & my dad still talks about it. He always said he wanted to blow it up & have it framed. The print we had was misplaced. My dad thinks he may have given it to someone to blow up & then maybe forgot to pick it up or the person forgot to return it. If the picture is still out there somewhere, I would be so excited to have it e mailed to me if possible. I would love to give that to my dad as a father's day gift. I was a little girl with a short hair cut & the man in the back ground was jumping beside a girl with longer hair. Thank you.

Heartland Hustle

This was a great race. It was in mid October in 1988-89 and attracted world class runners. I recall Arturo (sp?) Barrios and Prescilla Welch as well as Frank Shorter. It was designed to be an "Off season" Bix. The course was fast and flat, but the area was unable to support two major races over the long haul.

I remember the year he won the Steamboat Classic in Peoria
