Registration is now underway for the second 5K Trail and Treat Run/Walk in Carey Park on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. Participants can register online (http://tinyurl.com/trailandtreat), by mail submission, or at Genesis Health Clubs in Hutchinson (an event sponsor). The highlights - participants aged 14 and under are free (with a paying adult); breakfast is free; you can wear costumes; you can bring your dog; groups of 20 or more can sign up for only $17!

Organized by the Vitality Team of the Reno County Growth Coalition, the event is designed to increase use of the existing trail system, provide residents with a fun wellness opportunity, and raise money for trail amenities. Other event sponsors include Hutchinson Clinic and DCI.

“The race is open to people of all ages and fitness levels. Last year we had a great event with over 100 participants and the most ideal fall weather conditions,” said Ryan Diehl, vitality team co-chair.

Registration is $20 for participants age fourteen or older and includes a race t-shirt and breakfast ticket. There is no fee for children under age fourteen. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Friends of the Trail Fund at the Hutchinson Community Foundation. Money donated to the fund will be used to provide trail amenities for Reno County trails, such as signage, trees, water fountains, and waste baskets.

“The Vitality team strongly believes in the importance of the trail system and wants to encourage greater use of the trails by the public. We’d also like to see the continued expansion of trails in Reno County,” said Jessica Miller, Growth Coalition coordinator. “The Friends of the Trail fund is one way we can impact and encourage further trail expansion.”

Since the race falls on the day before Halloween, participants are encouraged to dress in costume if they’d like. Prizes will be awarded for best costume and other categories. The Young Professionals of Reno County are hosting a breakfast at the Homebuilders Shelter for race participants and the general public from 9:30 – 11 a.m.
